NZ road nationals and Cyclocross World Champs

Posted on 20 January 2012

It's been a bit of a rocky month in the health department which resulted in me withdrawing my entry from the NZ Road Championships. I was pretty upset not to race, but it would have been a pretty miserable experience with a sinus infection which has resulted in yet more antibiotics (grrr). I really hate taking them, it can't be good for the body in the long term at all. Maybe the manic schedule in December, plus the two days travelling to get to NZ did it, but either way it was RUBBISH.

And then a triathlete took out the women's road race at the Nationals! - nice work by Nicky Sammuels. The best part was that she was scheduled for a 20 minute training run after the race, because she wasn't targeting the event.

On the plus side I got three weeks with my family, which was amazing and hysterical all rolled into one. Xmas with my family is like no other, we all have a very warped sense of humour, so it was pretty entertaining. I also got a lot more sun than Scotland is getting right now, and did some mountain bike riding in the sunny Hawkes Bay. I can really see why NZ Dhill riders are doing so well overseas at the moment. NZ riding is technical and muddy and basically offers everything - I struggled to get the swing of things for the first hour riding into trees, falling down banks...

BUT the month is ending on a high. I've been selected to represent NZ at the World Cyclocross Champs in Belgium next weekend. It was all looking a bit touch and go last week, but it's all on now. Time to bring out the speedy gonzale legs!
